The Wrestler (2008)

Directed by Darren Aronofsky

Written by Robert Siegel

Loved the film. This is very different compared to Aronofsky’s other films and it is well made. We fall in love with Randy through the film. We fall in love with the kind of relationships he shares with the people around him. Everyone loves him. Even his daughter accepts and starts loving him.

We don’t see what kind of a man Randy was before, what kind of father or husband or friend he was. All we see is his now. We see him as he is now. He’s a wrestler but he is kind, friendly, patient and alone.

I loved Randy and Pam, the way these characters share their affection between themselves. It’s beautiful. It’s very nice to see how organically this affection flows between them. There’s no drama. Everything is very simple. Even the scenes with Randy and his daughter.

Like Natalie Portman in Black Swan, I wouldn’t call Randy in The Wrestler as obsessed with his profession because he is even ready to let go of it easily when he has his attack. It’s just that he feels lonely outside the wrestling ring, he feels like an alien outside.

In the end, when Pam comes for him, it should be right for us to wish him not to wrestle but go with her and yet Randy’s made up his mind and at that moment we know how it will end. Even though we know it, the end is still beautiful as he falls from the ropes of the ring on his opponent or to death. We’re not shown if he dies or lives but I’m sure he dies. He dies at home. Maybe he was wrong. He could’ve easily let go of this and went with Pam, started a new life. But the end doesn’t feel wrong. It doesn’t feel tragic. It is oddly satisfying that he dies and that he dies with a smile on his face.

Loved the grainy look in the film. Loved the dialogues are written, especially those between Randy and Pam. I wish I can write characters like these.

The Wrestler is a must watch. I love Black Swan to the bits. The Wrestler is right next to it.
